Pet neutering

Neutering

The decision to neuter your pet can be a difficult one, but we believe the health benefits far outweigh the negatives. We recommend a full health check at the age of 6 months for puppies and kittens, the vet can check the growth and development of your pet and advise the best time for neutering.

Dog neutering

We can neuter dogs from six months of age, however it depends on the size of the dog and the gender. We normally wait for male dogs to reach 10-12 months of age for them to mature.

Ideally we would spay a female dog before their first season as it gives best long term health benefits, but some are too immature at 6 months of age.

We also offer Laparoscopic neutering which is a much less invasive option with a quicker recovery time.

Cat neutering

Cat neutering

We can neuter cats from 5 months of age or at least 2kg for neutering.

This may seem young, but cats can become sexually mature soon after this, and getting your cat neutered early is the best for them. Cats that are going to be outdoors should not be let out until they are neutered.

Benefits of Pet Neutering

Animals waiting to be neutered

Neutering male and female dogs and cats offers a wide range of benefits for both the animal and the owner, including health and behavioural improvements.

Health Benefits

Choosing to neuter your pet can help to eliminate a number of health problems. In males, neutering eliminates the risk of testicular cancer, and in female animals it will eliminate the risk of ovarian and uterine cancer.

Choosing to neutered your female dog will also prevent infections such as pyometra which can be a life threatening condition that can affect female unneutered dogs.

Behavioural Improvements

Neutered male animals are less likely to display aggressive behaviour toward other animals and, therefore, reduces the likelihood that they will engage in fights. And male pets, especially male cats, are far less likely to spray their territory once neutered.

Both male and female neutered dogs tend to be calmer and less hyperactive than intact males and females. While neutered cats are less likely to roam in search of a mate. This is particularly beneficial for outdoor cats as it reduces the risk of them getting lost or injured.

Population Control

Choosing to get your cat or dog neutered or spayed helps to prevent unwanted pregnancies. This, in turn, will help to prevent issues like overcrowding animal shelters or stray cats and dogs.

Pet Neutering FAQs

What is neutering?

Neutering is a surgical procedure that removes an animal's reproductive organs. For male animals, this is called castration, and for female cats and dogs, it’s called spaying.

Is neutering painful for my pet?

As neutering your dog or cat is done under anaesthetic, your pet won’t feel any pain during the surgery. However, following the procedure, there may be mild discomfort so speak to your vet about any pain relief options and aftercare that can help make your pet more comfortable, lead to a smoother recovery, and ensure fewer complications.

Will neutering change my dog's personality?

While neutering doesn’t change a dog's fundamental personality, it can alter a dog's behaviour, particularly those behaviours that are driven by hormones. Neutering animals can help keep them calmer.

Are there any risks associated with neutering?

Neutering is one of the most common surgical procedures that we carry out, however as with any surgery, it carries a small risk of complications. It's important to remember that serious complications are incredibly rare, and we believe that benefits of pet neutering outweigh the risks.

Why are there price differences in neutering?

Prices for pet neutering can vary depending on the sex and size of your dog. For example, it costs more to spay and neuter large breed dogs due to factors such as the amount of anaesthetic that needs to be administered.
